Westlake 37

Pleasant Grove 31

Head Coach Cody Burdett cheers on 170 lb Brice Page just seconds before pinning his opponent.

For the first time in 10 years, Westlake Thunder wins the dual against the returning 6A state champions and perennial powerhouse Pleasant Grove Vikings. According to the Beehive Top 25, Westlake is currently ranked at #20 but should move up several notches after upsetting #2 Pleasant Grove.

The Mighty Thunder enjoyed an early lead with wins from Freshman Jace Brower (106), Junior Caden Dunn (113), Sophomore phenom Jacob Finlinson (120) and Freshman Tucker Butler (126). The Vikings pulled out some wins in the middle weights to gain a slim lead. Trent Taylor lost a heartbreaker in the last few seconds 13-10 and Brock Page lost an overtime thriller. Westlake then went on to win three matches in a row by pins from Senior Brice Page (170), Senior Zak Warren (195) and Junior Anthony Stockwell (220). At that point, the Thunder victory was secured.

Friday and Saturday The Mighty Thunder will continue to make noise at West High’s Capital City Classic.
